The ORTEC Pipe Monitor (PGM-1) is designed to monitor fluid/vapor density in nuclear reactor coolant pipes. Other applications include corrosion product activity monitoring, sulfur activation analysis in coal slurries, and stack monitoring. High-purity germanium (HPGe) radiation detectors are used in applications that require high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements, such as reactor coolant pipeline monitoring. However, all germanium radiation detectors require liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling to operate. Special dewars (thermos flasks) are designed to meet compact space requirements.
Reactor coolant pipes can reach temperatures as high as 650°F within 0.5 inches of the detector window. To ensure adequate cooling protection in this environment, the stainless steel end caps have built-in cooling tubes that circulate cold water as needed. This small but sturdy assembly is flanged to the coolant pipe.
Liquid nitrogen is refilled periodically via a separate automatic filling system attached to the rear of the housing. The LN2 Dewar has a retention time of over 16 hours. Electrical connections to the detector components (preamplifier power supply, detector, high voltage bias, high voltage cutoff, amplifier output, test pulse generator input) are made via jun specification connectors. This compact (maximum dimensions are approximately 20 inches long and 6-1/2 inches in diameter), rugged radiation detector assembly can be operated indoors or outdoors.
