USAThe CIRS 013 Chest Phantom is a disposable training tool and practice medium for mammographic needle biopsy procedures.American CIRS 013 chest phantomIt is also a good quality assurance device for stereotaxic systems and should be used when installing or servicing new systems to ensure accurate needle placement. This phantom can be used for positioning accuracy testing in the American College of Radiology's Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Certification Program.

The phantom body is shaped to represent a partially compressed breast. This allows the user to easily compress the breast to4.5cm thickness for good imaging. The shape also allows the phantom to be used in the system with the patient prone or seated.American CIRS 013 chest phantomMade from a proprietary gel that has a similar physical consistency to human tissue, and because the gel is a non-flowing material, it won't leak when punctured. The gel is surrounded by an elastic skin-like membrane, enabling palpation of embedded masses and providing needlestick resistance.

Embedded within the phantom are solid blocks in a number of size ranges. These radiographically visible masses can be biopsied multiple times. The mass appears black, allowing for easy visualization of a successful biopsy. These solid masses are randomly positioned so each phantom provides a unique training experience. Two calcification clusters were located in the medial transverse plane at the right and left edges of the phantom. These calcifications can be biopsied or used in the breastQA inspection of radiography systems. To help visualize the location of calcifications, two groups were each clustered around a white but radiolucent mass.
