Food Monitoring Instructions - Radioactivity in Food and Its Measurement
This note lists the types of radiation found in food, possible sources of contamination, and examples of how to handle them.
Measurement of Radionuclides in Food and the Environment
The Food Monitoring Guidelines were issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1989 after the Chernobyl accident. Sadly, it has. This guide provides extensive information on methods, sample preparation, and more. Although the equipment mentioned is outdated, the other information is very useful.
Benefits of using very large germanium gamma-ray detectors for quantitative determination of environmental radionuclides
Comparing many large and very large HPGe gamma-ray spectrometers, the benefits offered by larger detectors from a sample throughput or detection limit perspective are significantly greater than those offered by higher efficiency. At a given MDA - one 90% efficient detector can count the same number of samples as four 30% efficient detectors. Alternatively, one 90% detector can achieve significantly lower MDA per sample while processing the same number of samples as three 30% detectors. For environmental spectrometers, these advantages are very practical because the efficiency costs of larger detectors are lower than the efficiency costs of smaller detectors.
