This economical device has a minimum threshold of -5 mV, allowing good timing measurements at very low energies. An acceptable input signal without saturation is -5 V, with an input dynamic range of 1000:1. Type 584 is suitable for high count rate applications at 50 MHz and pulse pair resolution ≤20 ns. For a 100:1 input dynamic range, the Model 584 has a time swim of ≤±100 ps.
Various controls are used to optimize the 584 model in various applications. A precision 10-turn potentiometer is used to set the threshold from -5 mV to -1 V. The block time set by the block output width is continuously adjustable from ≤10 to ≥1000 ns. This feature effectively prevents multiple triggering of scintillator pulses with long decay times, such as NaI(Tl). The front panel LED is used to indicate that the discriminator has been triggered and therefore can be used to set the threshold above the noise. Adjust the swim with the 20-turn potentiometer on the front panel. A constant score monitor on the front panel aids in swim adjustments. Since the constant fractional shaping delay is selected via an external cable, the delay can be easily selected for a specific detector application.
Model 584 has four NIM standard output signals. The positive output signal can be varied continuously from ≤0.5 to ≥2.5 μs via a printed wiring board (PWB) potentiometer. The polarity of the positive output can be selected through the PWB as the NIM standard positive output signal or compensation signal. The two timing output signals are NIM standard fast negative logic signals, each with a 2 ns rise time and 5 ns width FWHM. The blocking output signal is a NIM standard fast negative logic signal whose width is adjustable from ≤10 to ≥1000ns.
The Model 584 can be gated externally. Rear panel locking toggle switch selects gated or non-gated operation. In gated mode, printed circuit board jumpers select the power box door wire in the NIM power box, the NIM standard positive signal through the rear panel BNC connector, or the NIM standard negative signal through the rear panel BNC connector.
The logic current of the Model 584 is selectable between -6 V and -12 V NIM supplies via a rear panel locking toggle switch. When logic current is drawn from -6 V, the Type 584 is within the current distribution range of a NIM Class V powered single-wide NIM module.
