The picosecond timing discriminator accepts analog input pulses with amplitudes ranging from -50 mV to -5 V and pulse widths ranging from 400 ps to 5 ns FWHM. The 10-turn locking dial adjusts the amplitude threshold used to generate the timing output from -25 mV to -1 V.
Ultra-fast circuitry integrated into the picosecond timing discriminator minimizes time shifts. Therefore, the input amplitude can vary in the range of 100:1 with negligible offset in the timing output. This ensures excellent time resolution even if the signal source produces a wide range of randomly varying signal amplitudes. Front-panel screwdriver adjustment controls allow fine-tuning of shift compensation to match specific detector characteristics. The adjustment process can be easily monitored using a voltmeter via adjacent test points.
Two fast negative NIM outputs provide the flexibility to trigger time-amplitude converters (TACs) while driving other instruments. The 500 ns wide TTL output can be used in instruments requiring positive logic signals, such as counters and rate meters. The front panel LED flashes with each output pulse to indicate triggering.
For detectors with rise times less than 1 ns, the ORTEC Model 9306 1 GHz preamplifier is used to amplify the small signal before it reaches the input of the Model 9307 Picosecond Timing Discriminator. For rise times ≥1 ns, the Model VT120 fast timing preamplifier should be used in place of the Model 9306. Model 9307 integrates a compatible 9-pin D-type connector on its rear panel to power the preamplifier.
