    Detailed introduction

ORTEC's products are widely used in academic teaching laboratories in a variety of disciplines: Nuclear Engineering and Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Radiopharmaceuticals. Specifically, ORTEC provides a complete set of programmed experiments, including tutorials, experimental setup instructions, methods and student exercises.

    AN34 Teaching Experiment
The ORTEC AN34 Laboratory Manual provides numerous pre-written instructional experiments for nuclear science undergraduate laboratories.

Two versions of the experiment are provided. The third version of the experiment is based on the use of the classic NIM module. The newly developed fourth edition of the experiment combines classic NIM with new products, including integrated and digital electronics. The new "EASY-NIM" product suite is widely used in AN34 version 4.

    Experimental equipment
The extensive ORTEC range of nuclear instruments related to radiation detection and spectrometry includes: radiation detectors, modules (NIM) for pulse counting and fast time measurements, signal processing modules, as well as modules and digital electronics for general multichannel analysis.

This modular design makes teaching laboratory instruments cost-effective, efficient, and reconfigurable. For example, several of the experiments in the AN34 lab manual can be performed on basic equipment with little or no additional equipment: just reconfigure the equipment you already have!

    Partnership and support
ORTEC extends support through partnerships with universities and other educational institutions to develop and advance new pre-written experiments.

If you develop a teaching experiment using ORTEC products, we would be honored to include it on this site for others to use. We thank the institutions for their contribution to the writing of the experiments and therefore include links to the websites of the writing participant departments.

    • The third version of the experiment +

The third version of the experiments is based on the use of NIM modules, while the fourth version of the experiments uses more recent products, integrations and commonly used digital electronics. Our new "EASY-NIM" product is widely used in AN34 version 4.

The experiments listed here include some from the AN34 Experiment Manual. We have added additional experiments and will add more in the near future.

It is recommended to include references (located under the "Libraries" link on the left) with these experiments.

If you need assistance, or need to purchase equipment for any specific experiment, please contact the factory.

    • radioactive source supplier +

Radioactive sources for the ORTEC AN34 experiment are available from suppliers around the world.

Radioactive sources should be ordered directly from the local supplier or the supplier's local agent in the country where the source is ultimately used. This is because the local agent is familiar with and able to assist with the licensing requirements of the end-use country. ORTEC has agreements with the two suppliers mentioned in the source supplier list:

The table below provides the supplier code and manufacturer code for each required source by experiment number. In each case, the respective supplier should first be contacted to obtain a copy of their local agent, from whom the end user can then obtain the emission source in accordance with local licensing regulations. ORTEC is happy to assist with this process if required, but recommends contacting the source supplier directly.
