    spectrum analysis
The core purpose of GammaVision is to accurately identify and quantify radioactive materials using high and low resolution gamma spectroscopy measurement systems. This process requires accurate system calibration and analysis setup, sophisticated peak search and fitting algorithms, and various corrections for background, peak interference, attenuation, reporting units, and other factors. It is also important to comply with regulations and standards for reporting measurement uncertainty and detection limits.

    Calibration
Accurate calibration is critical for correct peak identification and quantification - especially for complex spectra with closely clustered peaks. This can be a tedious and time-consuming process for some systems, but using GammaVision's calibration wizard makes the process incredibly easy. Just acquire the spectrum, load the calibration library and source certificate, and calibration is complete!

Calibration can also be automated as part of a routine counting or QA process.

    • Calibration type
      • Channels and Energy - Quadratic Fit
      • Energy and Peak Shape (FWHM) - Quadratic Fit
      • Energy and Efficiency - Natural logarithmic polynomial fit over the entire energy range; or linear, quadratic, and point-to-point interpolation fits for separate high- and low-energy regions
      • Peak to total (cascade summation)
    • Calibration process
      • Automatic energy calibration (US No. 6,006,162)

    quality assurance
Regular checks of instrument performance are necessary to ensure that the system is functioning properly when samples are analyzed. These inspections may be required by regulations, standards or other regulatory bodies as a result of audits. Performance specifications should include verification of system calibration parameters, definition of acceptance limits, and warnings when these limits are exceeded. Trend control charts are also suitable and are formally required for some applications.

    Main quality assurance functions:

    • Complies with ANSI N13.30 and ANSI N42.14 standards
    • Parameter monitoring
      • background count rate
      • total source activity
      • Total peak energy difference between spectrum and library
      • Average actual to calibrated FWHM ratio
      • Average actual to calibrated FWTM ratio
      • Individual peak details available in database
    • Low/high warning and minimum/violation limits with optional detector lockout function
    • Quality Assurance Reports and Trend Charts

    User interface and reliability
GammaVision provides an intuitive user experience, and the MCA emulator "spectrum window" is the focus of operation. It simplifies common processes (such as hardware control and count rate/peak evaluation), but also provides more advanced operations (such as calibration, QA and spectral analysis), with functions quickly accessible via "hot keys" or toolbar buttons.

The spectral view provides all the tools needed for basic MCA simulations, including hardware control, peak navigation and zoom functions, region of interest evaluation, interactive peak search, spectral overlay for comparison, isotope labeling for identifying nuclide common peaks, summation/subtraction of other spectra, and spectral smoothing. It also allows users to set preferences for color schemes and spectral data views.

For easy access to spectra, GammaVision's Multi-Detector Interface (MDI) mode can display up to 16 interactive windows (8 live detectors and 8 spectra from spectrum files), which can be operated independently. Additionally, multiple detectors can be enabled for efficient operation by synchronizing start, stop, and clear operations from a single command.

Spectra are typically collected using Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) mode, and the resulting data will be stored in channels associated with the pulse height. GammaVision can also store data or time-related events in "list mode" with the ability to filter events by user-defined time range after acquisition. This process allows long acquisitions to be scanned at shorter intervals to precisely identify when activity is detected or to view specific periods of interest.

Basic sample measurement is a simple process if you use the standard "Ask on Start" option. Simply check for user input required for each measurement, and the user will be prompted to select an applicable file or enter sample data at the start of acquisition. Additional options can be set to automatically save and analyze spectra and print analysis reports.

    Key user interface features:

    • View spectrum
      • View up to 8 live detectors and 8 saved spectra simultaneously
      • The display is updated in real time during collection.
      • Zoom in/out, independent of full spectrum window
      • User-defined spectral properties: color, data points
    • Interactive ROI/peak calculation
      • Peak center tract, shape, gross/net area and activity uncertainty

    Automation
While the toolbar and menu options are simple and intuitive, this method of operation does not guarantee the consistent processing typically required when measurements are taken frequently or by different people. In this case, a more structured approach can be achieved using simple text scripts called "jobs". This feature makes it possible to define every detail of a process ahead of time or create it dynamically via a custom user interface. Nearly all hardware commands, analysis parameters, and required measurement procedures can be programmed to obtain consistent and reliable results every time.

    Main automation features:

    • Simple text scripts require no programming experience
    • Define and set any analysis parameters or prompt user input
    • All hardware control functions are available
    • Jobs can be dynamically generated by custom data input interfaces
    • Custom variables are available for advanced programming
    • Run external applications to set parameters and automate data integration

    Hardware control
The interface between hardware and software is provided through the ORTEC CONNECTIONS architecture, which supports up to 250 detectors on the local network. This application layer contains all hardware drivers and communication protocols required by software applications to control MCB (Multi-Channel Buffer) instruments. Hardware controls are accessed through MCB property pages integrated with GammaVision and other standard ORTEC applications. Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 64-bit hardware compatibility applies to all ORTEC instruments using USB and TCP/IP connectivity protocols. Instruments that are dependent on the host (such as plug-in cards or USB devices) can optionally be shared on the network via a local MCB server, allowing the instrument to be controlled from a remote location.

    Key hardware control functions:

    • List mode data collection 1
    • High pressure control
    • Curve and trim gain adjustments
    • Zero point and gain stabilizer
