Micro-trans-SPEC Applications
- Nuclear material retention
- Nuclear safeguards supervision and inspection
- In situ waste analysis measurements
- emergency response
- Reactor maintenance (e.g., corrosion product monitoring)
- medical physics
Micro-trans-SPEC is smaller and lighter than all other portable HPGe spectrometers (LN2 cooled and electrically cooled). It expands the applicable scope of HPGe portable spectrometers.
Micro-trans-SPEC is easy to operate and provides everything you need. It offers many advantages for the application: no liquid nitrogen required, no long cables required, integrated design, ready to use.
Additionally, Micro-trans-SPEC weighs less than 16 pounds (a world record), making it 34% lighter and 20% smaller than previous trans-SPECs without any performance loss.
HPGe detector and cooler
The Micro-trans-SPEC HPGe detector uses an ORTEC GEM series P-type crystal (50 mm diameter x 33 mm (±10%) long) with a relative efficiency of approximately 13%, which is sealed in a "hardened" cryostat and cooled by an integrated, low-power, Stirling cycle cryocooler.
All Micro-trans-SPEC instruments use the same nominal germanium crystal. ORTEC can provide cross-sections showing building materials upon request and it is suitable for use with most Monte Carlo modeling programs.
The crystal is housed in an all-metal sealed ruggedized cryostat and cooled by a highly reliable miniature Stirling cycle refrigerator. The cooler is capable of providing approximately 1 W of thermal lift at 100°K and consumes less than 25 W of power during operation.
This version of Micro-trans-SPEC uses a new cooler that reduces noise and vibration and extends service life. The hardened cryostat does not contain traditional molecular sieves, allowing the instrument to be turned on or off at any time during the detector cooling or warm-up cycle without any risk. This cannot be done with a traditional HPGe cryostat system as it requires a careful temperature cycling process to avoid damage.
digital electronic equipment
A built-in digital MCA system and a dedicated data processor will be delivered with the product. The active digital noise reduction filter (LFR) in the digital spectrometer reduces the impact of mechanically generated microphonic noise on the detector output signal, resulting in good energy resolution. Under password control, the user interface controls the parameter settings of the electronic device. All models feature the same bright and clear VGA resolution display, touch-sensitive operation screen, and are readable in direct sunlight. Menu navigation is very intuitive. Radionuclide gamma-ray spectra can be displayed and manipulated (e.g., vertical scale, zoom) similar to traditional multichannel analyzers.
version, the Micro-trans-SPEC built-in battery provides ample power for up to 5 hours of operation and can be easily replaced in seconds, allowing for continuous field operation.
display and control
The new Micro-trans-SPEC model features a bright and clear VGA resolution display and a touch-sensitive operating screen. Menu navigation is very intuitive. The overall design is similar to the previous generation trans-SPEC instrument, but its functionality has been greatly enhanced.
In logarithmic and linear display modes, real-time radionuclide gamma-ray spectra can be displayed and manipulated (e.g., vertical scale, zoom) similar to conventional multichannel analyzers.
There are three rows of buttons logically grouped together. The top row is for ROI operation and navigation, the second row is for spectrum display control, and the bottom row is for hardware control, storing spectra, and navigating to menu mode.
Menu item design conforms to original trans-SPEC logic. The menu structure, including all text menus and screens from the original design, has been revamped to improve operator familiarity while offering the sleek look and practicality of new display technology.
Real-time activity calculation...no PC required!
Micro-trans-SPEC can use internally stored calibration information to perform simple nuclide activity calculations at the push of a button without the need for a PC. Easily manage: libraries used for analysis, displayed peak labels, unit labels and calibration parameters.
These parameters can be easily created and downloaded to Micro-trans-SPEC by MAESTRO (MCA simulation software), or entered directly. Parameters can be modified in the field to adapt to changing needs. Activities can be calculated for lists of up to nine nuclides. Spectral data can be saved and then reanalyzed in more detail with more sophisticated computer analysis packages such as GammaVision.
Peak information function
The Peak Information feature allows users to easily check if everything is OK with their data.
Data security
MCA data security is an important consideration. Menus are digitally password or PIN protected. Actions can be divided into two categories: users and administrators. The user password protects the instrument from unauthorized use and allows the user to protect data stored in memory. ADMIN or Setup functions are protected by different administrator passwords. ADMIN functions can only be changed by administrators to ensure results are based on the correct parameters.
Setup controls
All relevant instrument settings can be controlled under password protection.
Instrument "health status"
The Micro-trans-SPEC HPGe detector uses "SMART-1™" diagnostic technology to verify the normal operation of the instrument. "Health status" and instrument status are clear at a glance.
CONNECTIONS programs (such as MAESTRO included with Micro-trans-SPEC) can read health status parameters and display them on the laptop (if connected). They can also be displayed on the Micro-trans-SPEC status screen. A user-developed software package can read the status register via Micro-trans-SPEC for spectrum QA.
Flexibility in power supply selection
Micro-trans-SPEC can be powered by a variety of power sources. The charging circuit is inside the instrument. The instrument includes a mains power "module" that provides a 15 V DC output from a mains input voltage of 90-264 V AC, 47-63 Hz, so it can be used anywhere in the world. Additionally, a cable is included that allows the instrument to be charged via an auxiliary socket on a motor vehicle.
MCA Simulation and Spectral Analysis... Comes with MAESTRO MCA Simulator
Comes with version of MAESTRO MCA software to run on your PC or laptop. It provides a standard graphical user interface to control all system parameters from a convenient large screen.
MAESTRO is an ORTEC CONNECTIONS series product that can form a complete system network with other ORTEC spectrometers and supporting computers. MAESTRO includes functions such as identifying peaks, editing libraries, creating, printing and saving regions of interest (ROIs), performing energy calibrations and automating tasks using simple "job flows".
Wireless remote control and monitoring using mobile MCB server
The Mobile MCB Server software application enables any ORTEC portable instrument with a PDA to communicate with ORTEC software applications such as MAESTRO, GammaVision and Detective-Remote. The mobile MCB server acts like a wireless version of a USB interface, allowing users to control and monitor any portable spectrometer over a wireless network.
Create your own custom software with the optional A11 toolkit
The optional A11 CONNECTIONS Programmer's Kit is available for those users wishing to integrate Micro-trans-SPEC into their own software systems. The toolkit provides ActiveX controls to simplify programming in LabVIEW, Visual C++, and Visual Basic.
