trans-SPEC-N is an N-type HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer that is easy to operate and meets almost all needs. It doesn't require liquid nitrogen or long cables. It integrates almost all functions and is ready to use.
Many ORTEC trans-SPEC and Detective instruments deployed in the field have proven the reliability of this basic design and the revolutionary micro-Stirling cooler, which provides reliable and efficient cooling of integrated HPGe detectors.
HPGe detector and cooler
The trans-SPEC-N HPGe detector uses ORTEC GMX series N-type crystal with a diameter of 67 mm and a length of 69 mm, with a relative efficiency >50%.
Large HPGe crystal improves sensitivity and reduces MDA time. The "supersquare" geometry means high efficiency at energies above 2 MeV.
The crystal is housed in an all-metal sealed ruggedized cryostat and cooled by a highly reliable miniature Stirling cycle refrigerator. The refrigerator can provide approximately 1 W of cooling capacity at 100°K and consumes no more than 25 W of power during operation.
digital electronic equipment
Detector signal processing is implemented by advanced digital electronic equipment. The active digital noise reduction filter (LFR) in the digital spectrometer reduces the impact of mechanically generated microphonic noise on the detector output signal, resulting in good energy resolution. Under password control, the user interface controls the parameter settings of the electronic device.
display and control
The trans-SPEC-N model features a bright and clear VGA resolution display and a touch-sensitive operating screen. Menu navigation is very intuitive. In logarithmic and linear display modes, real-time radionuclide gamma-ray spectra can be displayed and manipulated (e.g., vertical scale, zoom) similar to conventional multichannel analyzers.
There are three rows of buttons logically grouped together. The top row is for ROI operation and navigation, the second row is for spectrum display control, and the bottom row is for hardware control, storing spectrum data, and navigating to menu mode.
Real-time activity calculation...no PC required!
trans-SPEC-N can use internally stored calibration information to perform simple nuclide activity calculations at the push of a button without the need for a PC. Easily manage: nuclide libraries for analysis, display of peak labels, unit labels and calibration parameters.
These parameters can be easily created and downloaded to trans-SPEC-N by MAESTRO (MCA simulation software), or entered directly. Parameters can be changed in the field to adapt to changing needs. Activities can be calculated for lists of up to 9 nuclides. Spectral data can be saved and then reanalyzed in more detail with more sophisticated computer analysis packages such as GammaVision.
Peak information function
The Peak Information feature allows users to easily check if everything is OK with their data.
Data security
MCA data security is an important consideration. Menus are digitally password or PIN protected. Actions can be divided into two categories: users and administrators. The user password protects the instrument from unauthorized use and allows the user to protect data stored in memory. ADMIN or Setup functions are protected by different administrator passwords. ADMIN functions can only be changed by administrators to ensure results are based on the correct parameters.
Setup controls
All relevant instrument settings can be controlled under password protection.
Instrument "health status"
The trans-SPEC-N HPGe detector uses "SMART-1™" diagnostic technology to verify the normal operation of the instrument. "Health status" and instrument status are clear at a glance.
CONNECTIONS programs (such as MAESTRO included with the trans-SPEC-N) can read the health status parameters and display them on the laptop (if connected) or on the status screen of the trans-SPEC-N. A user-developed software package can read the status register via trans-SPEC-N for spectrum QA.
Flexibility in power supply selection
trans-SPEC-N can be powered by a variety of power sources. For initial cooling from ambient temperatures, it can be placed on a docking station or connected to a compact AC/power adapter/charger (PAC). The docking station has small air flow aids to assist with initial cooling in high ambient temperatures (>40°C).
MCA Simulation and Spectral Analysis... Comes with MAESTRO MCA Simulator
Comes with version of MAESTRO MCA software to run on your PC or laptop. It provides a standard graphical user interface to control all system parameters from a convenient large screen.
MAESTRO is an ORTEC CONNECTIONS series product that can form a complete system network with other ORTEC spectrometers and supporting computers. MAESTRO includes functions such as identifying peaks, editing libraries, creating, printing and saving regions of interest (ROIs), performing energy calibrations and automating tasks using simple "job flows".
Create your own custom software with the optional A11 toolkit
The optional A11 CONNECTIONS Programmer's Toolkit is also available for those users wishing to integrate trans-SPEC-N into their own software systems. The toolkit provides ActiveX controls to simplify programming in LabVIEW, Visual C++, and Visual Basic. For more information about the toolkit, please contact us to request the A11 Programmer's Toolkit manual.
