The pulses are generated by a relay that can operate asynchronously to the line frequency to measure the spectral broadening caused by noise and ripple on the AC line.
The instrument has a charge terminator and a 100 Ω voltage terminator. A charge terminator is used to convert voltage pulses into charge pulses for subsequent amplification by a charge-sensitive preamplifier. Use voltage terminators to feed voltage pulses directly into other instruments such as amplifiers, discriminators, and ADCs. There is a holder on the back panel for storing the charge terminator when not in use.
Due to its excellent stability against changes in line voltage and ambient temperature, Model 419 maintains selected amplitudes during longer experiments.
The output peak amplitude can be adjusted from 0 to +1 V using the internal reference voltage when both outputs are terminated into 100 Ω loads. The attenuation factor affects only the attenuated output and reduces the amplitude driving the high-gain amplifier input.
An external reference voltage (20 V) can be used to generate arbitrary waveforms (such as a ramp input) to check the linearity of the entire system. The output level is 50% of the input.
