Each linear input pulse must exceed the adjustable discriminator level to produce an output pulse. The linear output pulse has a fixed rise time, 100:1 dynamic range, adjustable width, and is delayed by an adjustable interval (0.5-5μs) after the linear input pulse peak. In coincidence or anti-coherence mode, the input linear gate can be disabled or enabled for an adjustable gating period following the gate input logic pulse. A switch-selectable external gating input allows the output to be gated at an adjustable interval (5-50µs) after the input pulse peak. A slide switch on the front panel allows selection between three input connection methods: DC coupled, BLR low or BLR high. These characteristics make the Type 542 suitable for installation directly after a linear amplifier in a system.
The pulse from the busy output on the rear panel indicates the duration from the peak of the line input pulse to the end of the output pulse (set by the pulse width control), or the duration from the line input pulse to the reset of the input discriminator, whichever is longer. This output can be counted in a scaler to indicate how many pulses the system is delivering, or it can be integrated to indicate relative dead time.
