The amplifier uses active filter shaping (0.5, 1.5 and 3.0 μs shaping times) and can be used with various types of radiation detectors. It is particularly suitable for use in conjunction with proportional counters and scintillation detectors commonly used in X-ray, nuclear spectroscopy measurements, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer experiments. High amplifier gain improves the performance of proportional counters because they can be used at lower operating potentials, thereby improving gas gain versus count rate stability. The amplifier's short resolution time ensures high count rate capability without sacrificing the energy resolution of the proportional counter.
The amplifier features a switch-selectable single output for unipolar or bipolar pulse shaping. The unipolar output is suitable for systems that can maintain DC coupling from the Model 590A to the analyzer for spectral analysis. A baseline restorer (BLR) circuit is included in the amplifier to improve performance at all count rates. Baseline correction is only applied in the intervals between input pulses, and in addition, the discriminator level used to identify the input pulses is automatically adjusted. Unipolar output DC levels range from -5 mV to +5 mV. This output allows the use of the analyzer's direct-coupled input, minimizing interfacing issues.
The timed single-channel analyzer (TSCA) in the Model 590A is DC-coupled to maintain peak values within the adjustment window without drift due to changes in count rate. This enables stable operation with narrow window widths over a wide range of count rate variations, such as those commonly found in X-ray diffraction studies. The low level can be adjusted via the front panel controls or set via an external voltage.
The TSCA output occurs approximately 500 ns after the peak value of the amplifier output signal. This signal has very little wander over a wide input amplitude range, making the Type 590A suitable for slow coincidence or gating applications.
The External Low Level (Ext LLD) input of the Type 590A can be used in conjunction with an external voltage to set the low level. It can also be used with slowly varying voltages to vary the low level based on time or other measured parameters.
