BLACK MAX power supplies can be purchased separately for use with existing NIM chassis or ordered with the Model 4001C NIM chassis. Mounting hardware is included so that the 4002E is compatible with all ORTEC NIM chassis. With minor mounting changes, the Model 4002E can be used in most standard NIM enclosures. It is highly recommended to use the ORTEC Model 4001C NIM Chassis in conjunction with the Model 4002E because the Model 4001C uses copper busbars to distribute power, minimizing the voltage drop at each module's power plug. BLACK MAX power supplies are designed to exceed the V-H type power supply specifications defined in DOE/ER-0457T.
The conservative regulated DC power ratings provided by BLACK MAX to the connected chassis are +6 V @ 12 A, –6 V @ 12 A, +12 V @ 4 A, –12 V @ 4 A, +24 V @ 2 A and –24 V @ 2 A, provided that the total output DC power does not exceed 300 W at ambient temperatures up to 50°C. Additionally, 115 V AC voltage up to 0.5 A is available.
There are several ways to prevent overloading. When the heat sink temperature exceeds 95°C, a red warning light on the connection chassis control panel will illuminate. When the radiator temperature exceeds 110°C, the power will automatically turn off and the power and temperature indicators will go out. Thermal overload will automatically recover when the thermal load is reduced. The foldback circuit limits the output current of the DC power supply to 120% of its rating. This provides overload and short circuit protection. On +6 V and -6 V DC supplies, the crowbar circuit limits the output voltage to 7.5 V to protect the integrated circuit. The fuse protects the AC input of the power supply.
An external slide switch selects 115 or 220 V AC as the power input. The optional power input can be changed to 100 and 200 V AC by changing pins on the internal connector. The international standard IEC power connector allows the use of power cords and plugs that comply with local electrical standards. The main power supply is controlled through the switch on the NIM chassis control panel.
The power and control lines of the NIM chassis are connected through the standard interface connector specified in DOE/ER-0457T. Mechanical mounting of the power supply to the NIM chassis requires the use of standard bolts specified in DOE/ER-0457T to secure the bracket.
